General Resources: Speaking and Creating

A flexible skills unit for the creating side of Year 8 English. It teaches students to speak with purpose, design a presentation, tell a story, read a moving image, research responsibly and publish work for a real audience.

Year 8 English • General Resources • five-week unit • 16 public resources • no assessment instrument

What this packet is. It contains 16 public resources, including this overview. The unit can run as a standalone five-week sequence, or its pages can be dropped into text units when students need to present, discuss, design, film or publish. All models and examples are original; no copyrighted image, film still, script or worksheet is reproduced.

Unit outcomes

  • Speak for different purposes and audiences, using structure, voice and body deliberately.
  • Listen actively, build on ideas and disagree with evidence and civility.
  • Design a clear presentation that supports rather than repeats the spoken words.
  • Tell a short story aloud using pace, repetition, gesture and silence.
  • Write descriptive prose that selects sensory detail and controls sentence rhythm.
  • Read film and picture-book sequences using shot, composition, colour and sound vocabulary.
  • Research a question, judge source quality and record attribution.
  • Work in a group with defined roles, shared planning and fair accountability.
  • Publish a multimodal response with attention to access, consent and copyright.

Planning and support

The teacher notes include a core and extension route, low-stakes speaking routines, a group-production planner and a short path for classes with limited equipment. Differentiation is built into the teacher notes rather than published as a separate student page. The sources and provenance page records what is public, what is linked rather than copied, and what the packet deliberately leaves out.

No assessment instrument. This packet teaches and rehearses the skills; it does not publish an assessment instrument, answer key or sample answer. Use the checklists and feedback routines formatively, and adapt them to your class.
