General Resources: Reading and Writing

A flexible skills unit for the Year 8 English curriculum. It teaches the reading and writing moves that recur across the year: inference, evidence, close reading, paragraphing, sentence craft, vocabulary and revision.

Year 8 English • General Resources • five-week unit • 16 public resources • no assessment instrument

What this packet is. It contains 16 public resources, including this overview. The unit can run as a standalone five-week sequence, or its pages can be dropped into text units as needed. All model sentences and passages are original; no copyrighted text, image or worksheet is reproduced.

Unit outcomes

  • Use predicting, questioning, visualising, summarising and monitoring to read increasingly complex texts.
  • Make inferences and support them with precise evidence and explanation.
  • Annotate for diction, imagery, syntax, tone and shifts in a passage.
  • Build analytical paragraphs with a clear claim, short evidence, explained effect and a link.
  • Control sentence structures, punctuation and academic vocabulary for clarity and precision.
  • Read visual and multimodal texts, and discuss how design choices position a viewer.
  • Plan, draft, revise, edit and proofread a piece of writing.

Planning and support

The teacher notes include a core and extension route, a set of generic text-mapping templates, sentence-level scaffolds and a shorter path for classes with limited time. Differentiation is built into the teacher notes rather than published as a separate student page. The sources and provenance page records what is public, what is linked rather than copied, and what the packet deliberately leaves out.

No assessment instrument. This packet teaches and rehearses the skills; it does not publish an assessment instrument, answer key or sample answer. Use the checklists and feedback routines formatively, and adapt them to your class.
