Sources and Provenance
This page records how the packet was made and what it deliberately excludes. It is a transparency record, not a substitute for the novel or a guide to a prescribed edition. The packet is original teaching material written for LessPlan.
What this packet is
- An original, generic five-week unit on Jurassic Park for Year 9.
- Sixteen public HTML pages, including the overview and this provenance page.
- Written in Australian English for a secondary English audience.
- Static, print-friendly and usable without a login.
- Formative in purpose: it describes success criteria and feedback, not results.
What it is not
- It is not a school program, faculty plan or scope-and-sequence document.
- It is not a formal reporting instrument and contains no test papers, marking keys or reporting schedules.
- It does not reproduce the novel's text, chapter summaries, cover art or logos.
- It does not reproduce film stills, footage, scripts, dialogue, poster art or soundtrack.
- It does not contain student names, school data, staff details or confidential material.
- It is not affiliated with the author, publisher, film studio or rights holders.
Original content
All explanatory prose, tables, prompts, models, checklists and worked examples were written for this packet. The examples are fictional or generic: the junior technician, the board memo, the fence audit and the control-room sequence are teaching illustrations, not reports of real people, companies or events. Any resemblance to a particular school, workplace or production is incidental.
Public knowledge and concepts
The packet draws on long-established public concepts in literary studies, science fiction, film analysis and argumentation, including genre conventions, third-person limited narration, motif, adaptation, systems thinking and the claim-reason-evidence-warrant structure. These concepts are not owned by any single author and are presented here in original wording and examples. No proprietary framework, program or template is reproduced.
References to the novel and film
The packet names Jurassic Park, its author Michael Crichton and the 1993 film adaptation for the purpose of study and comparison. These references are factual and critical. They do not imply permission, endorsement or affiliation. Students should use their own copies of the novel and a licensed copy of the film if screening extracts.
| Reference | How it is used | What is not included |
|---|---|---|
| The novel | Discussed through original analysis and student-supplied evidence. | No text, chapter summaries, cover art or long extracts. |
| The film | Discussed as an adaptation in general terms. | No stills, footage, script, dialogue, poster or soundtrack. |
| Author and film-makers | Named for attribution and context. | No biographical claim beyond public, general information. |
| Scientific concepts | Explained in general terms as the novel uses them. | No claim that the novel is scientifically accurate or predictive. |
Student quotations
Students select short quotations from their own edition and record the page number. The packet does not supply a quotation bank because editions differ and because selection is part of the analytical work. A quotation log should include the page, the context, the exact words and the student's explanation. Quotations should be brief, accurately copied and used to support an interpretation rather than to replace it.

Deliberate exclusions
| Excluded | Reason |
|---|---|
| Formal reporting instruments, test papers and marking keys | The packet is a teaching and formative-feedback resource. |
| Scores, bands, weightings and rankings | These belong to a school's own reporting process, not a public packet. |
| Task numbers, due dates and submission dates | These are school-specific and change each year. |
| Student names, work samples and school data | Privacy and consent. |
| Novel extracts and chapter summaries | Copyright and the importance of student-selected evidence. |
| Film stills, footage, scripts and merchandise | Copyright and permission. |
| Internal staff emails and faculty planning | Confidentiality. |
Accessibility and print
- Pages use semantic headings, tables with header cells and a skip link.
- Colour is not the only way information is conveyed.
- Pages are designed to print without the site navigation.
- Text is written in plain Australian English where possible.
- Any film extract a teacher adds should be captioned and described.
- Tables are used for comparison and planning, not for decorative layout.
