Sources and Provenance
This page records how the packet was made and what it deliberately excludes. It is a transparency record, not a list of prescribed films. The packet is original teaching material written for LessPlan.
What this packet is
- An original, generic five-week unit on documentary for Year 9.
- Sixteen public HTML pages, including the overview and this provenance page.
- Written in Australian English for a secondary English audience.
- Static, print-friendly and usable without a login.
- Formative in purpose: it describes success criteria and feedback, not results.
What it is not
- It is not a school program, faculty plan or scope-and-sequence document.
- It is not a formal reporting instrument and contains no test papers, marking keys or reporting schedules.
- It does not reproduce a documentary, film script, transcript, still, poster or soundtrack.
- It does not contain student names, school data, staff details or confidential material.
- It does not endorse a political party, candidate, product or advocacy organisation.
Original content
All explanatory prose, tables, prompts, models, checklists and worked examples were written for this packet. The examples are fictional or generic: "Return to the Creek", the closed pool, the retired teacher and the community-centre closure are teaching illustrations, not reports of real films or events. Any resemblance to a particular documentary, school or place is incidental.
Public knowledge and concepts
The packet draws on long-established public concepts in film and documentary studies, including documentary modes, mise-en-scene, the Kuleshov effect, diegetic and non-diegetic sound, and the distinction between evidence and illustration. These concepts are not owned by any single author and are presented here in original wording and examples. No proprietary framework, program or template is reproduced.
Film extracts and links
The packet does not require students to watch any particular documentary and does not host or link to film files. Teachers select their own extracts under an appropriate educational licence or exception. A short extract for analysis is preferable to screening a full film without a licence. Do not upload a documentary, still or transcript to a public page without permission.

Deliberate exclusions
| Excluded | Reason |

| Task numbers, due dates and submission dates | These are school-specific and change each year. |
| Student names, work samples and school data | Privacy and consent. |
| Prescribed political campaigns and partisan material | The unit teaches analysis, not a position. |
| Copyrighted footage, stills, scripts, transcripts and soundtracks | Permission and copyright. |
| Internal staff emails and faculty planning | Confidentiality. |
Accessibility and print
- Pages use semantic headings, tables with header cells and a skip link.
- Colour is not the only way information is conveyed.
- Pages are designed to print without the site navigation.
- Text is written in plain Australian English where possible.
- Any video a teacher adds should be captioned and described.
