Teacher Notes: Comic Creator
Separate the thinking from the drawing. Students who plan a clear sequence in thumbnails produce stronger pages than students who start with a finished character and improvise the story.
What this packet is not. It contains no assessment instrument. The success criteria are formative and designed for feedback and revision.
Five-week pacing
- Week 1: panel grammar, sorting, and a one-page sequence exercise.
- Week 2: character design and expression work.
- Week 3: script and lettering.
- Week 4: thumbnails, pencils, inks, and letters.
- Week 5: readability testing, revision, and artist statement.
Differentiation
Support
- Provide a six-panel template with panel jobs labelled.
- Limit the story to one location, two characters, and one change.
- Offer a character sheet with silhouette, costume, and expression boxes.
Core
- Require a reader to follow the sequence without oral explanation.
- Ask students to cut one panel that repeats information.
- Check that speech balloons are read in the intended order.
Extension
- Ask for a wordless page that still communicates a clear sequence.
- Invite a deliberate colour script that changes across the page.
- Ask for an artist statement that explains one rejected layout.
EAL and language support
- Pre-teach panel, gutter, caption, speech balloon, sound effect, and reading path.
- Provide a script template with speaker, words, and image columns.
- Allow a storyboard with labels before lettering.
Formative feedback routine
- Ask a reader to retell the story from the page alone. Note where they hesitate.
- Check that dialogue adds something the image does not already show.
- Name one panel that could be cut and one that needs more space.
Use the quality guide as the shared language for feedback. It is formative and contains no scores or bands.
Materials and preparation
- Print the planner or checklist pages students need; project the rest to save paper.
- Check every link before the lesson. The packet is static and works offline once cached.
- Have a school-licensed copy of any studied text available. The packet does not host copyrighted texts.
- Decide how students will share drafts. Keep any student work inside the school’s approved system.
Access and inclusion
- All pages use semantic headings, a skip link, and print styles.
- Tables scroll horizontally on narrow screens; key instructions are also written in prose.
- Offer a printed copy or a plain-text outline for students who prefer it.
- Allow drawing, oral rehearsal, or a recorded response where it serves the same learning.
