Film Review Studio

Year 7 English • Animated Film • Formative studio sequence

This studio turns notes into a review with a spine. Work from a sequence you can replay, not from memory of the whole film. The aim is a draft that a reader can follow and argue with.

What you are making

A film review of an animated sequence for a reader deciding whether the film is worth their attention. The purpose is to make a clear judgement and support it with sequence evidence.

Success criteria (formative)

These criteria are for planning and feedback. They are not scores or bands.

Session 1 — Choose the evidence

  1. Select two moments from one sequence. Note shot size, angle, movement, sound, and cut.
  2. For each moment, write what the viewer knows or feels before and after.
  3. Write a one-sentence judgement that the evidence can support.

Session 2 — Build the review

  1. Open with the judgement and the film’s central tension.
  2. Give each body paragraph one moment and one analytical move.
  3. End with what the film leaves the viewer with, not a star rating.

Session 3 — Revise for evidence

  1. Underline every technique. Is it attached to an effect?
  2. Circle every plot sentence. Keep only those that set up analysis.
  3. Ask a partner to restate your judgement. If they cannot, rewrite the opening.

Teacher note

Run the studio across two or three lessons. Stop after each session and ask students to name one decision they made, not one thing they finished. The quality guide and this studio are formative; they contain no scores, bands, or confidential marking material.
